Snow Mornings, Warm Evenings

We slept with the curtains open so we could watch the snowfall

“I can’t wait until I can play in the snow with our kids.”

Sam says excitedly, as he inspects the snow in the morning.

And I reassure him his excitement will be equally returned

If any of our parents had come out to play in the snow with us

That would have made our whole day

I make Blueberry muffins

While he boiled us spectacular coffee for pour over

Put our boots on and bundled up

For a long walk through the neighborhoods in the freshly fallen snow

We invest more and more time into our favorite board game

Coming up with better strategies and close wins

Drinking seltzers and teas together

Laughing or stressing over the piece just put down

Excitedly looking up expansions, like the nerds we are

Our evenings end up so full most nights -

Birth class, bible study, helping out, or previous commitments

The weekends fill up

It’s always a blessing to host

But those evenings just the two of us

Reading devotions, getting in pajamas, and drinking tea while playing Carcassonne -

Or working on individual projects while listening to Snicket -

Are ones we value every week if possible

Winter means long, dark, cold evenings

But that doesn’t mean warm drinks and activities don’t come to the table

Reading books in bed

Discussing podcasts and future house dreams

Planning the paint colors for the baby’s room and our bathroom

It’s no longer dark at 4:30 pm,

And before we know it, spring will tease us back and forth

Then the baby will come

And life will shift all over again

So we can have those snow mornings

Where the kids pile on our bed

Excitedly begging for us to go sled
